Practical Guide: How to Find Celiac-Safe Restaurants on Google Maps

Celiac-Safe Restaurants
Finding restaurants that offer gluten-free options may seem simple, but for people with celiac disease, there is an important difference between a place that has “gluten-free” dishes on the menu and a restaurant that is actually prepared to prevent cross-contamination.
That’s why it’s worth doing a little research before deciding where to eat, especially when traveling with celiac disease.
In this article, I’ll show you how I search for gluten-free restaurants, what information I usually check, and what I look for before deciding whether a place seems safe for someone with celiac disease.
1. Search for “celiac” on Google
When looking for a restaurant on Google or Google Maps, you can try different combinations of keywords.
The word I like to use the most is “celiac.”
I prefer searching this way because it helps filter the results more effectively. When we search only for “gluten free,” many restaurants may appear simply because they have a few gluten-free options on the menu, but that does not necessarily mean they are prepared to accommodate people with celiac disease.
For example, if I were planning a trip to Paris, I would search for Paris on Google Maps and then type:
“celiac”
Google Maps will show several restaurant options related to the search.

But here comes the most important part: Are all of these restaurants actually safe for people with celiac disease?
That’s where the second step of the research begins.
2. Check the Reviews
Choose one of the restaurants that appeared in the search results and open the customer reviews.

Within the reviews section, use the search icon to search again for the word:
celiac
This allows you to find comments from people who specifically mentioned celiac disease or their experience eating at that restaurant as someone with celiac disease.
This is much more useful than simply looking at the restaurant’s overall rating.

I mainly look for reviews that mention:
- cross-contamination;
- the staff’s knowledge of celiac disease;
- food preparation;
- separate utensils;
- a dedicated fryer;
- experiences from other customers with celiac disease;
- possible reactions after eating at the restaurant.
If the reviews are written in another language, Google will usually translate them automatically. Give it a try 🙂
After that, I compare different reviews to understand whether the restaurant really seems prepared to accommodate people with celiac disease.
Because one thing is for someone to write:
“They have gluten-free options.”
It’s completely different to find reviews such as:
“I have celiac disease, I spoke with the staff, and they explained how they prevent cross-contamination.”
These small details can make a big difference when deciding where to eat.
3. Search for the Restaurant on Google
After finding a restaurant that seems interesting, search for its name directly on Google and visit its official website.
Restaurants that truly understand the needs of people with celiac disease will often make this clear on their websites.
When a restaurant clearly explains how food is prepared and what precautions are taken to prevent cross-contamination, that is already a good sign.
On the other hand, if the website only mentions “gluten-free options” without explaining anything about food preparation or celiac disease, I prefer to keep researching before deciding to eat there.
4. One Last Tip: Save the Restaurants That Seem Safe
When you find a restaurant that seems prepared to accommodate people with celiac disease, save it on Google Maps. You can create a specific list, such as “Gluten-Free Restaurants” or “Places to Try.”
This makes things much easier when you are traveling or want to eat out without having to start your research all over again.
Even so, keep in mind that restaurant procedures can change over time. Before visiting, it is always worth checking the most recent reviews and confirming the information about cross-contamination and food preparation again.
